Why we are fans of ‘Da Boys….the psyche of Dallas Cowboys fans explained

I’m new to the world of sports blogging and from what I’ve seen thus far, a female perspective is lacking-but never fear, I’m here to supply! While it seems the boys of blog do a fine job quoting stats, talking trash, and weighing countless win/lose scenarios, what’s missing is an exploration of the emotions that make adrenaline pump through the bodies of sports fans across the country.  Therefore my blog will explore how I feel about what’s going on in the sports world rather than scrutinizing what the reality of it all is-I know, just like a woman.

I LOVE the Cowboys yet they are the team so many folks love to hate, and I can understand why.  Thus, for my first entry, I feel compelled to shed some light on why I, and millions of others, are Cowboy fans. Truth is, I can’t help it, I was born a Cowboy fan.  I really was-it’s almost genetic!  Check out the historical evidence: When I was about 5 my dad got so upset that I was rooting for the Redskins (which I was doing in order to get his attention because I knew he wanted the Cowboys to beat that team more than any other, master manipulator from a very young age) that, over his friend’s loud protests, he turned down the volume on the game and explained to me that “We LOVE the Cowboys baby!  The Cowboys are OUR team.  We root for the Cowboys!”. And at the church I grew up attending, our preacher would adjust the time of Sunday morning services during football season so he could get home in time to watch the game.  Even recently-the only text message my mother has ever sent says “how ‘bout them Cowboys!”  (We’re so proud.).  But you see my point; so many experiences contribute to the fans we are today that some of us really can’t help who we root for.  It's not based on any rationale, it's all heart.

Still, I agree, there is not a whole heck of a lot to like about the Cowboys in the last few years- especially if you are concerned about noble things like a respectably ran franchise and players your kids can look up to.  I actually tried not to be a fan this year.  The whole Jessica Simpson/pink jersey/run off to Mexico right before the must win game thing really pissed me off…but I couldn’t do it.  When America’s team, MY TEAM, ran out on that field this year, my heart started pumping, my hands started sweating, I thought about all the games I’ve agonized over!  So give us a break, the true blue Cowboy fans like me-especially those around my same age (30ish) have put in our dues.  Our team sucked for so many years while we were growing up and I watched every-single-game.  How can we turn our backs on OUR boys now?  It’d be like selling stocks your grandparents bought for you when you were born, just when they started making money, because it wasn’t a “green” company!  You could do it, and some folks would praise you (especially here in Portland but we don’t even have a professional football team nor do we get 2 games in each time slot on Sundays so that doesn’t really count), but come on…wouldn’t be uhmm…prudent. Bottom line-yes, Jerry Jones lets his players run wild, he loves the circus like environment because even if they lose, the media will still talk about ‘da boys and that keeps people watching Cowboy games. And yes, we were happy to take the trouble makin’ TO and Pacman-who is a total criminal.  But, as a fellow blogger so righteously put it, “Sometimes karma sucks!” So we all eventually get what’s coming to us and what’s coming to me and all those other lifelong Cowboy fans is at least a playoff win-right?!! Oh, and I suppose I should say something about tomorrow’s game….I really feel like the Cowboys will win!
