The Roy Williams Rant: Are you serious?

Roy E. Williams is sad.  He’s upset.  He’s frustrated.  Despite playing for a legitimate playoff team (which he hasn’t done…well, ever) he is upset about the chemistry between himself and quarterback Tony Romo.

"It's just not even close," Williams said of his on-field rapport with the quarterback. "It's not even funny. Not even close."

Roy then goes on to insinuate that when Tony Romo throws the ball to the other receivers on the team the passes are on target, but when they are thrown his way they are not where they should be.  That’s just a shade away from claiming that Romo is drawing up plays in the sand with all of his other receivers and freezing him out.  Then he had this to say about Miles Austin’s recent success:

"I'm the No. 1 receiver," Williams said. "But things are just going No. 2's way."

Just because you get a No.1 receivers paycheck doesn’t make you the No. 1 receiver.  Why would you even say this?  It’s embarrassing.  Now they’re going to ask him every week if he still thinks he’s the number one receiver.  “Hey Roy, Miles caught 10 passes for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns and you caught 1 for 15 yards…are you still the No. 1 receiver?”  Hell no!

The reason why the passes aren’t close to him is because he is not getting separation.  He thinks he can just get in front of a guy and he’s open. Tony Romo leads his receivers away from the defenders and it’s worked for him. He doesn’t want to take the risk of throwing to someone who isn’t really open.  Why throw it to a covered receiver when all of your other receivers are open.  Roy doesn’t have the speed and the quickness to separate and it’s becoming painfully obvious.

Why can’t he just take some responsibility and put everything on himself?  Why does he have to hate on everybody and put himself on a pedestal?  “I’m the No. 1 receiver, but the quarterback ain’t throwin’ it right!” “I’m the No. 1 receiver, but the other receivers keep catching all these passes and it’s not fair.”  “I’m the No. 1 receiver, but I don’t like to lift weights.”

Roy is insisting that he is nothing like T.O. and he is right.  T.O. was actually good.  T.O. worked hard in practice and at times had a right to complain.  There was no doubt who the best player on this offense was.

Roy is complaining and no one even cares.  The offense is fine without him (although he has been doing a decent job of blocking).

The fact is that Roy Williams just isn’t as good as he and Jerry Jones thought he was when he signed that lucrative contract.  He did have one good year with the Lions, and he is still young but let’s put this in perspective.  He had 1,300 yards receiving on a bad football team that had to throw the ball a lot to stay in games.  Mike Martz was the head coach and his offense automatically has two 1,000 yard receivers.  For God sakes, Mike Furrey had a thousand yards that year and he came into the league as a safety.

But it’s just not enough to say that this guy is overrated.  He doesn’t even work hard.  He has this sense of entitlement because he was a first round pick and it’s making him look like a real jackass.  I don’t hear any other receivers complaining like he does.  If he was as good as he thinks he is then the chemistry should happen instantly right?  How long did it take Tom Brady and Randy Moss to get on the same page?  How long did it take T.O. and Tony Romo to make some big things happen?  How long before T.O. and Donovan McNabb were a Pro Bowl duo.

Tony Romo has the credentials, Roy Williams does not.  I’m not going to say the Cowboys should give up on him just yet, but he has a long way to go.

All hope is not lost for Mr. Williams.  There are plenty of receivers who were not born with natural quickness and speed who were effective receivers in this league.  One of them actually played for the Cowboys, went on to become a Hall-of-Famer, and would be more than happy to come in and show Roy some techniques.  Of course I am talking about the legendary Michael Irvin.

Roy fits the body type of a Michael Irvin, but he does not have the intensity, tenacity, competitiveness, technique, or heart of a Michael Irvin.  Right now, Roy is looking pretty soft and he needs to go to Michael Irvin boot camp.

But I have a feeling Roy won’t reach out.  He just doesn’t seem like the guy to go the extra mile.  It’s well documented that Roy is not a big fan of working out.  I mean he stays after practice with Romo for 15 minutes or so and suddenly he’s putting in extra work.  That shit is not extra!  That’s what you’re supposed to do!  This is your job!

In short, Roy Williams needs to just shut up and get better.  He needs to hold a press conference and say, “Hey, I can’t give the money back and I may not ever live up to my contract, but I am going to shut up and be patient.  I am going to work on my technique and just get better every week.  I am going to stay at Michael Irvin’s house during the week and learn how to be a professional and a leader.  I apologize to Tony for trying to throw him under the bus and the entire organization for being a baby T.O.  From this point on you will not here much from me.  I am here to win a Super Bowl.  Thank you.”

Enough said.
