Shopping for free agents in the NFL is not much different from shopping for groceries at the grocery store.  You must make your grocery list based on what you need, while keeping an eye out for great deals.  You want to avoid overpaying for something that you either don’t need or won’t be satisfied with.  You need to keep you eye out for dropping prices.  It is also essential that you stay away from flawed products that have disappointed in the past.  These are all keys to being a smart shopper in the NFL free agent market.

n #1:  DECEMBER 

It all started in New Orleans when the Cowboys took on the undefeated New Orleans Saints.  They were coming off back to back losses to the Chargers and Giants and the December monster continued to loom.  Most experts predicted that the Cowboys would not only lose Saturday night in New Orleans , but that they could possibly free fall out of the playoffs with more late-season losses.  The Cowboys went on to man handle the Saints for the majority of the game and DeMarcus Ware added a signature performance  to his growing legacy.

-division games against the aforementioned Chargers and the best team in the leaguer right now, the New Orleans Saints.  The last time the Cowboys played the Saints they got beat worse than the Patriots did last night (and that was in December, too).  And the Redskins are no pushover either.  They eked out a 7-6 win against the struggling Redskins two weeks ago in Dallas, so you know they’re going to be a tough out in Landover.  Either way you look at it, it does not look good for the Cowboys down the stretch.  But, there is reason for hope.

Too often in this business, we rush ahead to the next big event without taking pause to evaluate the past and learn from it. In a way, this study will still be a celebration of the coming 2009 draft as I believe it will shed some light on certain overlooked trends that no one ever stops to consider. This is the kind of game the Saints often find a way to lose. The Chefs' offense has been improving and they had Larry Johnson back from his - um, off-the-field issues. Drew Brees was spectacular as always but the true star of this game was the defense. They stuffed the Chiefs on two crucial goal line stands, sacked the mobile Thigpen four times and came through when they had to.

A week filled with late game nervousness and dominant performances. The Texans were the ones doing the prowling as they tore apart the Bengals. 'America's Team' didn't look so sharp, but they found a way to win. The NFL brought a real shootout to London (hopefully no one was hurt!) and Brett Favre didn't look good for the second consecutive week, but thankfully for the Jets, they played the Chiefs. I'll cover those games in this week's Fallout report!

1) San Diego Chargers @ New Orleans Saints

Saints are slated to be the home team in this one as the NFL heads overseas to play at London's Wembley Stadium for a second consecutive season. Giants and the Dolphins played last season in a soggy-rainy affair at 'legendary' Wembley. I remember going into that game a lot of people were like wow "Giants-Dolphins" is what we brought overseas?! Turns out...we brought the Superbowl Champions over there. Just shows any team can take the prize at the end of the tunnel. Especially this season with the NFL being more unpredictable and 'topsy curvy'. This game features two disappointments so far this season. Things however are looking worse for the Saints as lead running back Reggie Bush suffered cartilage damage in his knee against the Panthers last week. The Saints have also lost all 3 away from the Superdome. For some reason...my gut is thinking the Saints, but I'm going to pick safe here and go with the healthier team and pick San Diego.

While watching my Vikings play the Saints the other night, I was treated to one of the most hilarious moments I have ever had while watching an NFL game.  I don't exactly remember when in the game this was, but at some point a defensive lineman from one team jumped into the neutral zone and made the offensive lineman from the other team move.  The penalty should clearly be for offensive false start (as a defensive player is only penalized if he touches an opposing offensive player before the snap), and that is exactly what happened.  However, it was the way in which the much-maligned Ed Hochuli made the call that was so hilarious to me.  A few years ago, the NFL began cracking down on their officiating crew, most notably to get them to thoroughly explain each call made on the field.  Thus, Hochuli's statement about the false start penalty: "A defensive player jumped into the neutral zone before the snap, but that does not excuse the offensive player from false-starting, resulting in a 10-yard penalty".  I love it!!  Perhaps it was just the lateness of the hour or my lack of sleep at the time, but I found the in-depth description of that play to be absolutely hilarious!

Now, the news that Marques Colston is out for 4-6 weeks hits New Orleans fans where it really hurts. Colston had grabbed more passes than any receiver in history through his first two seasons. The third-year is often when wide receivers have their breakout years. That can't be the case for Colston now, at least statistically.

I am not about to fall into the trap of getting too excited about preseason results. The New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals first-team offenses looked good, or their first-team defenses continued looking bad depending on who you ask. The Saints didn't have new acquisition Jeremy Shockey or old standby Deuce McAllister, so it will be exciting to see what firepower they add.

The Ft. Worth Star Telegram reports the Dallas Cowboys, badly in need of another wide receiver, are the latest team to suggest to Joe Horn that he no longer fits that definition.  Since the Saints gave up on Horn three years ago he has averaged a paltry 525 yards a season. As emotional as it might have been for Saints fans to see a longtime productive receiver go, looks like New Orleans was dead on in its assessment of what Horn had left.

The New Orleans Saints added two former members of the Arena League's New Orleans Voodoo Tuesday, signing center Rob Hunt and guard Isaiah Ross. Hunt has bounced around the NFL quite a bit. He is a former fifth-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts. From there he spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons on the Denver Broncos practice squad and in the 2007 preseason was a Kansas City Chief. He played two seasons in the now defunct NFL Europe for the Berlin and Rhein franchises.
