Terrance Newman

a grasp of Rice.  All 3 of Rice’s TDs came on plays in which he wasn’t covered by Terrance Newman (whatever that means).  On the first score he was covered one on one by Gerald Sensebaugh and I think we all know what happened on that one ( or do we? )The next one he was completely uncovered because he threw a block initially and then snuck down the middle of the field unbeknownst to the Cowboy defenders.  The last TD, Mike Jenkins just couldn’t make the play and gambled for the knockdown, allowing Rice to walk into the end-zone.  I’m not saying you have to double team this guy, but you know the Vikings have vertical threats and it makes sense to have safety help over the top at least.  Geez!  Brett Favre

on, the WR/CB match-up is one that favors the Cowboys.  Mike Jenkins is playing lights out and Terrance Newman should match up better with the Chargers receivers.  San Diego’s wide outs are big and fast, but not super quick like the Giants wide outs (who they cannot stop).  Newman and Jenkins should be able to control them while the other guys pressure Rivers and double Gates.  If the Cowboys allow Antonio Gates to have a big game then they can kiss the playoffs goodbye.    Get back the special teams spark

ing big was about to happen.  On Brandon Marshall’s 51 yard touchdown catch, cornerback Terrance Newman was within inches of knocking the ball away or intercepting it.  He played picture perfect coverage, but the pass and catch were just a little more perfect.  Once Marshall started making his way down the field I just kept yelling “Let him score!” so the Bronco’s couldn’t run out the clock to kick a field goal. That would at least give Tony Romo one more chance to make something happen.  They didn’t necessarily let him score, but my wish had come true.  I felt good about the final drive.

The tackling was still pretty bad.  Terrance Newman is showing his deficiencies as a tackler despite having a hell of a game shutting down Steve Smith and getting a pick-six.  Ken Hamlin is supposed to be the enforcer on this defense but I saw him whiff on a couple of plays.  And Hamlin’s coverage was just awful.  He pretty much gave the Panthers their lone touchdown allowing two big plays right over the middle.  I have backed Hamlin since he came to Dallas but I’m not sure he is deserving of that new contract he received last off-season.  The drive killing penalties were also devastating in the first half and Jason Garrett has to find some way to correct that (more on him later).

If I were the coach of the Cowboys’ I would start Orlando Scandrick opposite of veteran Terrance Newman.  Everything that I have seen, heard, or read about Mike Jenkins suggests that he thinks the job is his to lose.  Although Jenkins appears to be more physically gifted than Scandrick, his performance to this point has been underwhelming.  For one, Jenkins spends way to much time with his eyes in the backfield.  He might get a few more picks, but he’ll get burned a lot.  He got smoked by Kenny Britt (4.5 40 yard dash compared to Jenkins 4.38) in the pre-season and the only thing that kept it from being a touchdown was the fact that Vince Young terribly under threw  the ball giving Jenkins a good couple of seconds to catch up to the ball and break it up.  To make matters worse, he let Justin Gage run free down the sidelines for a touchdown the next drive and then immediately started pointing fingers. (Can anyone say Roy Williams?) And who can forget about this play.  That’s my problem with Jenkins.  He’s so athletic that he’s not playing hungry and he’s not playing smart.  He’s trying to be Deion Sanders, and there is only one Deion.
