Tony Romo

21 December 2011

t getting 15-20 carries a game and Sammy Morris showed exceptional toughness on Saturday night, but Tony Romo will be the engine that drives this potential playoff buggy.  Romo is better than he has ever been but that is not guarantee of success going forward.  The defense will have to do more of what they did in the first half against Tampa Bay, and less of what they did in the second ( same goes for Romo).  If these guys can just tighten the ship down the stretch, I don't think there's anyone out there that would want to face this team (except for maybe Eli, he kind of owns Cowboys Stadium).

Whenever I think back to this past Sunday’s game against the Vikings, everything just seems blurred.  Although the final score read 34-3, I just can’t imagine how things got out of control so quickly.  The Cowboys were moving the ball well and playing pretty well on defense initially.  Then suddenly, they were getting stampeded.  Not by Adrian Peterson.  Not even by Chester Taylor.  They weren’t even being mauled by Minnesota’s Pro Bowl laden offensive line.  So what the hell happened?!  Well in review, it was a lot of things but at the same time it was one thing:  respect.  The Cowboys underestimated and undervalued players on the Vikings and players on their own team.  They underestimated the effect of a home field advantage in Minnesota.  They also under estimated the amount of desperation that needs to be displayed in every playoff game.  Somewhere between beating the Eagles twice and getting demolished by the Vikings, the Cowboys forgot that they were playing the one of the top 2 teams in the conference.

The Dallas Cowboys have pulled off their first playoff win in years.  Tony Romo is now 1-2 in the playoffs, and Wade Phillips finally has won one himself.  Phillips and Romo had been known as "choke artists" in the past years, Romo fumbling a kicker hold against the Seattle Seahawks and throwing an interception late against the New York Giants.

ms.  Although he did catch a touchdown pass, it was the only pass he caught all game long, and Tony Romo did all the work on that play by escaping the pressure an throwing a picture perfect pass to Williams in the corner of the end zone.  All Roy had to do was catch the ball (I mean he is getting paid $9 million a year to catch passes, right?).  But it was disappointing to see

They face their toughest test on Saturday.

Tony Romo hasn't looked horrible this December: far from it.  He hasn't thrown perfectly on every pass, but he's completing the passes he needs to and avoiding turning the ball over.  Normally he is part of the problem in December.  This time, he could be the solution.  Against the Giants he threw for 392 yards, 3 touchdowns and set new records for attempts and completions.  Against the Chargers he was less stellar, but still threw for 249 yards and 2 touchdowns. Over the past three games his lowest QB rating was 111.7.

gic.  And let’s not forget that the Cowboys have a new/old holder in the famous/infamous Tony Romo.  Although Romo’s last hold will forever live in infamy, it should be a good move to put him in place of Mat McBriar who was struggling as a holder.  That does not exonerate Nick Folk in any way, but it is at least worth a try.    Harrass Rivers

A game like Sunday begins to make you wonder, “Are the Cowboys truly incapable of finishing out a season?”  Despite getting a career performance from their quarterback (41-55, 392 yards, 3 TDs, no picks), the Cowboys fell to a Giants team in turmoil.  Eli Manning completed less than 50% of his passes and the Giants couldn’t find any consistent offense.  So how in the world did the Cowboys lose this game?

me.  He doesn’t even seem upset.  He takes no ownership of his faults.  Sure, Tony Romo let some passes sail but he hit Roy in the perfect spot on deep in cut on third down and Roy Williams dropped the ball.  He did get hit on the play, but he dropped the ball before he got hit.  Even Laron Landry questioned his manhood. The Redskins players were getting hit after catches too, but they were holding on to the ball.  Roy hasn’t shown any toughness going back to the Denver game when couldn’t manage to get on the field for one last play from the goal line.  If Bill Belicek coached this team, I have no doubt that Roy would be sitting on the bench right now, if not totally inactive.

yet most everyone picked the Cowboys to win.  So naturally the Cowboys fell to the Packers and Tony Romo’s streak of November greatness came to a crashing halt.

Roy Williams had his best game of the season and his worst game of the season at the same time.  He went over 100 yards for the first time as a Cowboy and scored a somewhat meaningful touchdown seeing as how the Cowboys had not been shut out since the Quincy Carter era exactly 6 years ago.  But a solid finger can be pointed at Roy when it comes to this loss.  He not only fumbled the ball, which led to Green Bay touchdown, but he dropped a critical third down pass.  Still, he is not the only one culpable in this defeat.

Tony Romo has been the best quarterback in the league over the past 3 weeks.  It is hard to argue that point, but he cannot have a let-down now.  Romo needs to continue to protect the ball well.  He may not find space to throw for 3 touchdowns but he needs to continue to throw the ball short and let his receivers make plays.  As I said earlier, the tight-end should play a crucial part in this match-up.  Show Them Who the Tough Guys Are

You're damn right I will be.  If that happens, I will be calling for the Head of Tony Romo.  Don't get me wrong, I believe he can do it.  It's just that TR has shown us both sides of the quarterback coin.  He exhibits the scrambling ability of a one Roger Staubach.  The toughness of Dan Marino (See shot to the chin).  There is the problematic interception throwing of Brett Favre.  The early Peyton Manning in his inability of getting over the hump.  Of course, Peyton was able to overcome that problem and get to a Super Bowl, but how many of us believed that he would never do it, failing year after year in the AFC Championship.  I fully believe Tony will finally join Peyton in the promise land. As long as he avoids Donovan Mcnabb's fate, which is get to the Super Bowl, lose, and never get to that point again.  If he doesn't achieve playoff success then this is the final year for

hat's right, I said it.  Average.

Like I said, it's over.  Done with.  Tony Romo said some things he regrets, and Troy Aikman set him straight.  TO is TO and Pacman is gone forever (with JJ, never say forever).  We will dump a "Tank" and a fool that was named after an 80's video game, and the healing will begin.  Now if only mean ole Wade can shut Roy Williams up.  Detroit practices better than the Cowboys do?  0-16 Roy.  I guess talent does make a difference.  As much as I hate that statement, he may have something.  Roy's one example was when running plays in Detroit, all wide receivers block downfield.  That doesn't take place in Dallas.  In this, I have to agree.  You practice what you do in the games.  Roy will continue to do this, according to him.  The second comment he's made is how easy the offense is to read.  He is not alone in this, as Tony and TO have express this very thing.  Ray Lewis said as much before the last home game at Texas Stadium, then went out and proved it.  While this may be true, and the departure of Tony Sparano appears to have hurt the Cowboys more that we know, we don't need our team players broadcasting it out for all to hear.  I respect what Roy has said, but enough already.  Take it to the team, take it to the coach, if you're concern is valid, i'm sure he'll do something about it.  It's his job.  And if he can't, then he needs to be replaced.  Wade has made the promise.  Not many believe him.  I for one, have to give him the benefit of the doubt simply because we don't have any other options.  We, as fans, have no say.  It's all up to JJ, and he's blazed a trail for the last 13 years.  Not one playoff win.  No satisfaction.  So until JJ wakes up and realizes, "Wait a minute, I fired Tom Landry and Tex Shramm for the same reason!"  We're all screwed.  They can look great on paper all they want.  Paper don't win Championships.  Defense does, as the Cardinals painfully proved a few weeks ago.

I might?

From The Mail Room:

Jerry P., Philadelphia, PA:  Tony Romo is a great quarterback. Just look at his numbers for the last 3 years.  Last year should have been a Cowboys super bowl if not for Crayton's dropped pass. Yes Tony has had problems, but after last season he lost even more his quarterback coach.  Tony needs a good quarterback coach to help him in some situations and he will win for this team. It took many great ones 3-4 years before they really flourished into a superstar quarterback. If all the right coaches are put in place next year they will win. Tony just needs one playoff win to get started.  Go Cowboys no matter what I bleed Blue and Silver. Forever...

For this one, Tony Romo is listed as having a 'back contusion', but is expected to start the game. Thats good news, but I wouldn't expect otherwise. This game is just as big as last Sunday night against the Giants. The Ravens also have a lot to play for as they try for an AFC wild card bid. If the Ravens defense has their way, they'll have Romo on his heels. But who do I think will win this game? Good question. I pick Dallas. They just have too much talent. Baltimore has a lot to play for, but Dallas is Dallas. I pick Dallas! I think Romo and co will find a way....any way to win against Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Joe Flacco and company on Saturday night in the last game played at Texas Stadium.

; He won't mind though when da boyz win the superbowl!

Utopia1dc:  Bobby Joe, I think Tony Romo was snubbed because the media plays up how poorly his record has been in December the previous two seasons.  While I agree that he hasn’t played his best ball in December, he didn’t lose those games all by himself.  The other thing to remember is that Romo isn’t a seasoned veteran either.  He has only been a starter for a little over two years now.  Let’s wait a few years before we throw him under the bus.  As far as winning the Super Bowl, that would be sweet justice for Romo (especially if he’s named MVP), and many of the Cowboys whom have been vilified this season.

One Giant Win

The bickering Cowboys banded together as a unit on Sunday night to hand the New York Giants their second consecutive loss.  This was one exciting win as Tashard Choice once again proved that he is for real.  No Felix Jones?  No problem as Choice delivered in the fourth, a quarter that is usually reserved for Marion Barber.  Barber was not himself, he finished with 8 rushes for 2 yards.  That's an average of 0.3 yards a carry.  Choice on the other hand was 9 for 91 yards and a touch.  His average carry was 10.1 yards.  Big difference.  It's safe to say that without Tashard Choice, the Cowboys falls back into the same type of game that they had against the Steelers, and blow another late lead.  The truth is this team played together, all the worthy components charging as one unit.  Romo battling through a back contusion, and coming back to score.  As he did against the Browns in game one, remember the taped chin?  Witten converting on that 3rd and 9 late in the game.  This was the game winner, Choice adding to it on the next play just icing on the cake.  The Defense was great.

second half and tighten up, which should have opened up the passing game.  Either the wind or Tony Romo screwed that up.  Tashard is good enough that with Marion Barber and Felix Jones, they improve the backfield beyond what the Giant's three headed monster can do.  My feeling is that if Marion can't go, then Tashard will do the job.  My concern last week was that he would be the lone back and the added pressure might cook the rookie.  But his play proved me wrong, and I was pleasantly delighted with the results.  The loss was not on Tashard Choice.  A defensive gate that opened up in the last 7 minutes and fubar play by

Deshea Townsend had other ideas as he put the final stamp on the Steelers rally as he intercepted Tony Romo and ran it back for a pick six with 1:40 left in the game. A few things went wrong in the play that Townsend picked the ball off. Jason Witten ran the wrong route, but also Romo's throw wasn't terribly accurate. Romo put the blame on himself after the game. What a mess.

I take the T-day holiday off and the NFL goes crazy.

Just when I thought that Donovan Mcnabb was the dumbest player in the NFL, Plaxico goes off, literately in his pants.  Dumb doesn't even begin describe the Giant wide receiver.  Listen, this guy is a disgrace.  People like this should not be allowed to reproduce.  He makes millions a year, while the rest of us who WORK FOR A LIVING follow the law with the greatest of ease.  Hell, I'd have to say that most of us who even have weapons, have the God given sense not shoot ourselves in the thigh.  This kind of thing is a comedy bit for TV and movies.  You agree with that right?  You have some character in a TV show or a movie that is the dumbest moron possible, and someone gives him a gun, or he buys one.  What happens next?  Bang, that's what happens.  But for this to happen to such a talented receiver, I seriously thought it was a joke.  I checked, it's not April 1st.  It's December 2008!  This doesn't really happen in real life, does it?  If so, then it happens to the lower 20% out there with IQs below 50.  And even some of those guys are smart enough to keep the saftey on.  Shock and Awe Cowboy Nation.  Dnabb, you didn't know the rules.  Fine.  At least you didn't shoot yourself.  You're still dumb, but at least you're not Fing stupid.

Yesterday, the Cowboys defeated the San Francisco 49ers, at Texas Stadium, by a score of 35-22.  Don’t let the score fool you, the ‘Boys were in cruise control mid-way through the 2nd quarter.  The Cowboys defense started off a little shaky, but they were able to limit the 49ers to field goals.  After the 1st quarter, the boys trailed 6-0, but that’s when it happened…the game changed in an instant!

Just this past Sunday (November 16th), something occurred in the NFL during a post-game news conference that has left me dumbfounded.  The Eagles and Bengals played to a 13-13 tie.  Usually that would be news in of itself, since ties are very rare in the NFL.  In fact, the last tie came in 2002.  The last time an Eagles game ended in a tie was, coincidentally, on November 16, 1997 against the Baltimore Ravens.  But what’s got my panties all up in a bunch is what Donovan McNabb had to say after the game.

to the defense for the first time in over a month.  Both sides of the ball played well.  Tony Romo returned, putting up numbers like Brad Johnson, yet it didn't look quite the same.  After getting off to a rusty start, Romo was able to navigate the boys through bumpy terrain that is the Washington defense.  He had two interceptions, one that was his fault and one that was TO's fault.  TO proves that it didn't matter who the quarterback was, he was going to put up an average game.  On the other side, Roy Williams put up similiar numbers as TO, but most of his receptions came off of drive saving first downs.  In such a short time, Roy Williams has suddenly become more valuable than TO, playing with heart.  Don't tell me that Cowboys' fans don't appreciate the first down signal from the receiver, once he gets it for his team.  Kind of reminds me of another guy who used to do that?  Anyone?  Rhymes with Treytaker?  Anyone, anyone remember...HOFer.  First name the same as one of the Jackson five?  Anyone?

Williams, Jason Witten, Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin…oh yeah…Tony Romo…that’s a nightmare for a defensive coordinator!

But, first things first, is Romo going to come in after a 4-week lay-off and be at the top of his game?  Will Romo and Williams have their timing down considering they have only practiced a few times together?  No and no…but that’s okay!  Anything has to be better than what we have seen since Romo has been out of the line-up.  Let’s just hope, that it’s not…too little, too late!

The crystal ball was a little off this past week, going 2-2.  That now puts me at 16-16 for the season, right at the .500 mark.  Not exactly great, but we will take it, especially since we didn’t get off to a great start.  We even had to have a changing of the guard a few weeks back, but this crystal ball knows that it could be next if it falters!  Let’s take a look back and see what happened this past weekend.

Last night, on Sunday Night Football, the Philadelphia Eagles wasted a golden opportunity.  The Birds lost to the New York Giants 36-31, at home.  Lincoln Financial Field (The Linc) was as loud as ever.  The Philly faithful were out in full force, only to be let down, once again, by the Eagles.  Many fans are fed up and frustrated with the team.

That is a rare thing in this league. The Dallas Cowboys are dependent on Tony Romo. The San Diego Chargers seem to be dependent on Shawne Merriman. The Philadelphia Eagles are dependent on Brian Westbrook. The Detroit Lions are dependent on Barry Sanders, oh yeah, he is retired. That might explain a few things.

The Cowboys have a bye this week and it could not have come at a better time.  The ‘Boys are in a tailspin, as they have plummeted to the bottom of the NFC East, at 5-4.  All hope is not lost though!  Heading into this season they were the “en vogue” pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.  They were the clear-cut favorite to win the whole enchilada!  Now, they must regroup, get healthy, and somehow salvage the season.

3. Tony Romo (DAL)—The young gunslinger may only miss three games, but this is a pivotal stretch for a team that was already struggling to find its identity prior to Romo’s injury. With backup QB Brad Johnson misfiring the pigskin like a cross-eyed Chad Hutchinson, Romo needs to get healthy ASAP.

The Cowboys are sitting at 4-3, having lost three out of their last four games after a 3-0 start.  This is not how Jerry Jones had envisioned this season unfolding.  The Cowboys had 13 Pro-Bowlers last year.  They had 22 of 24 starters returning (Marion Barber replaced Julius Jones and Zach Thomas replaced Akin Ayodele).  Jerry had good reason for optimism.  The Cowboys had a decent draft by selecting Felix Jones and bolstering their cornerback depth. They also acquired Adam Jones on a draft day trade.  The Cowboys were 13-3 last year; a Super Bowl would surely be in their grasp this year?

When Bill Parcells resigned as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones did an extensive search to find his replacement.  It was believed, at the time, that Norv Turner was the front-runner.  The new head coach was going to inherit Jason Garrett, as Mr. Jones had already hired Garrett as the OC.  In the end, Jones decided on Wade Phillips.  The reasoning was that the Cowboys defense needed a proven “3-4 guy” to take what Parcells started to the next level.

na scores on back to back drives.  And once again, the offense looked stagnant at times.  Tony Romo had absolutely no time.  He was constantly rushed, hit, sacked, and forced to fumble.  Most of this can be attributed to the offensive line.  The Cardinal defenders were able to push and slip past them.  As a result, Romo broke his pinkie finger, and Mat McBriar's punt was blocked in OT and taken in for the winning score.

A few minutes before the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday afternoon, Jerry Jones pulled off a blockbuster deal for WR Roy Williams of the Detroit Lions.  Yes, I said “blockbuster”!  Keep in mind that trades are very rare in the NFL…especially at the trade deadline!  The Cowboys gave Detroit a 1st, a 3rd, and a 6th round draft choice.  In return the Cowboys received Roy Williams and Detroit’s 7th rounder.  Did Jerry overpay?  Did Jerry panic?  That would be NO and NO!

Talk about the right place at the right time!  Crayton was in the endzone when a bullet pass from Romo bounced out of the hands of Miles Austin and into Crayton's right arm (which he proceed to catch one handed).  This play sealed the Cowboys lead in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
