Wade Phillips

wanted to show what they had to new GM Bruce Allen.  Result:  17-0 shut-out, courtesy of Wade Phillips and his suddenly vaunted defense.  The Cowboys had punched their ticket to the playoffs but I have to admit that there were still some unanswered questions.

Tony Romo is now 1-2 in the playoffs, and Wade Phillips finally has won one himself.  Phillips and Romo had been known as "choke artists" in the past years, Romo fumbling a kicker hold against the Seattle Seahawks and throwing an interception late against the New York Giants.

ade enough plays to keep the game out of reach, there is still plenty to be anxious about.

Wade Phillips can breathe a small sigh of relief as his job is safe for the time being, but I’m not sure the same can be said about offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.  While the distribution and efficiency of the passing game is a reason for excitement, the continued failure to capitalize on critical conversion and scoring opportunities may cost this team in the playoffs.

This is unacceptable and Wade Phillips needs to start holding individuals accountable, right now. Lastly, we still have no idea what this team is.

As I stated in my last blog , no matter what happened against the Chiefs there would be more questions than answers at the end of the day.  The one thing that some fans can take solace in is that despite fumbling the ball 4 times and committing 13 penalties, the Cowboys were able to come out with a win.  There is no doubt in my mind that if the Cowboys play the way they are capable of playing they can beat any team in the league.  But if they continue to play the way the played against Kansas City, then the Chiefs might very well be their last victory of the season (minus the Oakland Raiders).

rlando Scandrick.  Right now no one is on the same page, and a lot of the blame has to fall on Wade Phillips.  For a coach who is certainly on the hot seat and who also serves as the defensive coordinator, he hasn’t been able to work any magic at the start of the season.  This defense made the Buccaneers look like an offensive juggernaut and ultimately couldn’t make the crucial stop to put this game away.

oach out in Cowboy land!  Nation, I give you our new and improved Defensive Coordinator:  Wade Phillips.  Feel gypped?  Me too.  Although, I will say that the defensive players like the "drastic change" that Wade has presented.  I actually read a quote that Wade is now in a lot of defensive meetings.  Great.  Who else thinks this is a fantastic idea?  Wade's demeanor has changed as well.  He may not be at the level of Bill Parcells or Jimmy Johnson, but he is no cupcake either.  I like that he is trying, but

e it.  But, Jerry thinks he is the long-term answer for the Cowboys…just not yet.  Wade Phillips will be back for another year.  After that, I could see Jerry pulling the trigger and handing the reigns over to Garrett.  Don’t be surprised to see Wade stay on as the defensive coordinator either, if and when Garrett is promoted!

rs over his head?  He has ties to my favorite team (Cowboys).  The current Cowboys coach (Wade Phillips) has ties to the Chargers…it was simple to root for them, even though I had picked the Colts to win the game (and the Super Bowl).  As for the Eagles, it was a little harder.  They are the archenemy of the Cowboys, but that wasn’t my stumbling block!  What made it difficult was the way I get treated day after day, week after week, and year after year by Eagles fans.

This past Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys traveled to Lincoln Financial Field to play the Philadelphia Eagles in what was a win and you’re in the playoffs game.  This game had a lot of build-up prior kick-off.  The Eagles found out, about 15 minutes before the game started, that the stars had aligned for them; the Bears and Buccaneers had both lost.  This game had everything football fans wanted.  It was the ‘Boys against the Birds, with their playoff destinies on the line.

The crystal ball, once again, had a stellar performance this past week, going undefeated at 4-0.  Truly a tremendous achievement, as many of the games had playoff implications.  That puts the crystal ball at 29-22-1 for the season.  That’s seven games over .500 (.567 to be exact).  Not many prognosticators gave the Cowboys much of a chance against the G-Men, but the crystal ball took a chance on them.  The ‘Boys rewarded the crystal ball, and pulled off the upset.  Let’s review and see what happened last week.

Last night, on NBC’s prime time Sunday Night Football, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the New York Giants, 20-8.  The Cowboys desperately needed the win, as they are fighting for their playoff lives.  The Cowboys are now 9-5, but so are the Vikings, the Bucs, and the Falcons.  The Eagles and Bears aren’t that far behind either.  With the Cowboys facing the Ravens and the Eagles in their next two games, the ‘Boys needed a win…desperately.

concerned with it.  Werder has a way of exaggerating the truth to fill his time on ESPN.  Wade Phillips did confirm that Owens, Williams, and Crayton did meet with Jason Garrett to discuss their roles in the offense.  But that’s a far cry from Romo and Witten designing secret plays…come on people!

Was it worth it?

Pac may be out for the rest of the season.  He just returned from a six game suspension in which he punched one of his bodyguards in a drunken rage and left the state for alcohol rehab.  What did this guy do for the team?  The only thing I can remember Pacman doing is dropping a bucket of water on Felix Jones on HBO's Hard Knocks during training camp....from the second floor.  That act could have turned out much worse that just picking on a rookie.  The shock could have had an adverse reaction on Felix Jones, a heart attack, a violent seizure.  Dumber things have happened, just ask Plaxico.  Other than that, he may have recovered a fumble, led the team in pass deflects, and stunk up the special teams.  Was it worth it?  The allure of Pacman, i'll admit, seemed promising.  I fully expected a punt return for a touchdown that would have changed a game or two.  An interception return to the endzone with a familar "Prime Time" dance in honor of his mentor.  At least a few bone crunching tackles the way the old Roy Williams used to, energizing the defense.  None of that happened, and i'm left with a big fat waste of space (between his ears) injury for the remaining three games in 2008.  Way to spend the cash Jerry.  I'm for cutting Pac, maybe the Lions pick him up.  He seems a better fit in Detroit anyway.

This past Sunday, the Cowboys had a 10-point lead against the Pittsburgh Steelers, late in the 4th quarter.  Then disaster struck, as the Cowboys were not able to finish off the Steelers.  All the Cowboys needed were a couple of first downs and the game would be over.  Nope…didn’t happen!  The Cowboys let the Steelers tie the game with about 2 minutes left in regulation.  Then, Romo gave the entire Steeler Nation an early Christmas present by throwing a pick-6…game over!

Last night, on Sunday Night Football, the Cowboys and Redskins met in a heated NFC East rivalry.  The ‘Boys came to Washington, sporting a 5-4 record, while the ‘Skins were 6-3.  The Cowboys welcomed back their offensive leader, Tony Romo, as well as Pro-Bowl corner, Terence Newman.  Dallas had already lost to the Redskins earlier this season, and this was a must-win game for the Cowboys.

Bowl quarterback hasn’t looked like he could throw a stone in the ocean this season has to be Wade Phillips’ worst oversight since coming to Dallas two years ago.

That being said, and I felt like it needed to be, the next most troubling aspect of this season has been the endless parade of yellow flags upon the field. Far too often this year, the lack of discipline on the team has both sustained opponents’ pivotal drives and negated game-changing plays by the ‘Boys. Would it surprise you to learn that we lead the league in penalties? With 71 such infractions, we’re ahead of second-ranked Arizona by nine! Well-coached teams like the Patriots (even though it pains me to give them their due) might total nine penalties over the course of three full games. That’s right, New England has just 24 penalties this year. They’re also 5-3 with a backup quarterback playing the entire season—and if you point out that lowly Matt Cassel could probably pass left-handed and still hit his receivers with better accuracy than Brad Johnson, I’ll throw something at you.

other teams with storylines.

Wade Phillips said he was going to be more involved in the defense…whatever he did…do it again!  That was the best defensive effort I have seen from the ‘Boys in a long time.  The defense played with emotion and a purpose.  Maybe the insertion of young athletic players in the secondary was a breath of fresh air?  Maybe the veteran players knew they needed to step up their game to compensate for the missing players?  Whatever it was, it worked…defensively anyway!

·         Bullet 1.  Wade Phillips has a lot to show this week in Tampa.  Two scenarios can play out here:  the Defense can hold Tampa to 13 or less, OR LESS…and win, Wade looks like a hero.  Then fires Brian Stewart.  OR, the Defense continues to look like Swiss cheese and signs of “Fire Wade” show up all over Dallas.  Mark my word.
