Week 6 College Football Rankings

WEEK SIX COLLEGE FOOTBALL RANKINGS

25. GT (4-1)
Considering the fact that a 3-point loss in Blacksburg is the only blemish on its record, Georgia Tech deserves to be ranked in the top 25. In his first year in Atlanta, Paul Johnson is definitely exceeding expectations.

24. TCU (5-1)
They’re still looking for a signature win, but they’ve won handily in every contest—save an excusable loss to OU. Keep an eye on their Thursday night game (10/16) with BYU.

23. KY (4-1)
Despite their undefeated record going into the Alabama contest, I wouldn’t have had them ranked. However, in light of their heroic effort in defeat, I’m comfortable moving them up a few slots.

22. UNC (4-1)
This is the first time since I started following college football that I would rank the Tar Heels in the top 25. Like Georgia Tech, their sole defeat was at the hands of Virginia Tech.

21. CAL (4-1)
I like Cal, but they always seem to fall apart in mid-season. Was that embarrassment against UMD a mirage or an omen?

20. WF (3-1)
Wake moves up, despite a bye week. The jury is still out on this team.

19. KU (4-1)
That loss to USF doesn’t look too great now. This team clearly isn’t as good as last year’s.

18. UTA (6-0)
Escaped with a W over Oregon State. They’ll host both TCU and BYU, but they’ll need a better effort if they’re going to stand a chance.

17. OKST (5-0)
They’ve excelled against inferior schools, but they have a huge test next week as they travel to Missouri.

16. USF (5-1)
The Thursday night curse strikes again!

15. VT (5-1)
I thought this team looked awful at the start of the season, but they’ve quietly re-asserted their place atop the ACC. They’ll continue to take strides so long as Glennon remains on the bench.

14. OSU (5-1)
Big win over rival Wisconsin. Their quarterback situation reminds me a lot of Virginia Tech’s.

13. BSU (4-0)
They have another great opportunity to run the table this year. Their biggest remaining tests will be Nevada and Fresno State.

12. UF (4-1)
What’s wrong with this team? Granted they got their act together in the second half to rout Arkansas, but they’ve looked out of synch more times this year than was expected.

11. USC (3-1)
Their season hinges on the status of Mark Sanchez.

10. UGA (4-1)
Bye week came at a great time for the Bulldogs.

9. BYU (5-0)
When they face New Mexico next week will they be caught looking ahead to TCU?

8. VAN (5-0)
Who saw this coming? What a HUGE comeback win over Auburn! This school is the story of the year so far.

7. TTU (5-0)
Looked unstoppable against KSU. This team has more speed and playmaking ability than I expected. The receivers, in particular, see the field with great vision and awareness after the catch.

6. PSU (6-0)
Evan Royster continues to gash defenses for extra yards. He needs to be on some Heisman lists.

5. LSU (4-0)
The Tigers are still a wildcard for the national title this year.

4. UT (5-0)
This Texas defense is a lot better than people expected. Their big offensive line also appears to have made leaps and bounds from last year’s catastrophe. Bring on the Red River Rivalry!

3. ALA (6-0)
I dropped them one spot for failing to put away Kentucky. What a great game from Glen Coffee, who has been solid all year.

2. MIZ (4-0)
Look for their contest with Oklahoma State next week to rack up over 100 combined points.

1. OU (5-0)
So far, so good. In the understatement of the year, their match-up next weekend with Texas is a must-see. By the way, is anyone in college football playing as well as Sam Bradford? I’d take this kid in a heartbeat over Heisman winner Jason White.

Dropped out: Connecticut, Wisconsin, Oregon, Fresno State, and Auburn.

Added: North Carolina, California, Texas Christian, Kentucky, and Georgia Tech.

  1. I agree with this TOP 25...

I think USF should be a little lower because of their home loss to Pitt..

But otherwise it is a great assessment

And yes Evan Royster for HEISMAN!!Laughing

  2. OSU's quarterback system reminds you of Va Tech's?? I don't really see how you can compare Tyrod Taylor to Terrelle Pryor.  Pryor is a freak of an athlete and getting better every game.  Plus, Boeckman is pretty capable last time I checked, something VA Tech doesn't have: a pocket passer who is good.

  3.  Hi Dan,

OK, here's the comparison that I see... Taylor and Pryor were both All-American quarterbacks in high school. They're both dual-threats with great speed (Taylor runs a 4.5 forty, Pryor runs a 4.4). They were both rated as the number one player at their position by Rivals.com in their respective years. In fact, Rivals gave them the exact same value rating: 6.1. They're both still very young, but they've shown enough to evidence that their teams will be better off with them starting. They both had to beat out senior quarterbacks who have a lot more experience but lack the same playmaking ability. Glennon's 2007 numbers: 12 TD 5 INT 137 QB RATING. Boeckman's 2007 numbers: 25 TD 14 INT 149 QB RATING. I'm not saying the situations are identical, but there are a lot of similarities. The main point I was trying to make was that both OSU and VT will be much better off now that their younger, five-star quarterbacks are starting. Even though there will be some growing pains, these two quarterbacks add an extra element with their tremendous, natural abilities.
